many in our area. thank you for being up early with us. i'm gurvir dhindsa. let's go straight over to tucker to find out more about our weather. >> it will be another hot one today. our highs yesterday were back in the mid-90s. we'll do it again today. temperatures outside here in washington, we're back into the summertime temperatures. 77degrees right now in downtown washington. 74 at patuxent naval air station. 68 out at dulles. 66 at fed rick. a little better here off to the north and west. winchester, 66 degrees. changes from yesterday, not much of any. we'll have sunny skies today. just a cloud or two in the forecast and a possibility that, as we get into the afternoon, our winds will shift out of the south that. will increase the humidity around here a little bit. other than that, this forecast will remain the same. off to the south and east is earl and that will start to impact our weather as we get into the daytime hours tomorrow. let's worry about today first. 95degrees your daytime high. code orange air quality today. more details on the forecast. we'll look at earl in just

montgomery county police department, getting us up to date on the discovery communications building on silver spring. thank you for watching fox 5 news at 5 and our continuing coverage of this breaking news. i'm laura evans. >> i'm shawn yancy. let's go over the information. the good news is the three people being held hostage near the entrance of the building are out and all safe and we learned that police shot the suspected gunman and now have him in custody. >> they -- the police are saying that this happened at 450time and that the suspect was shot by police. a device appeared to go off. a pop was audible, according to the chief and there was some smoke. this is a joint operation between the fire department and rescue department. >> right now, police say this is an ongoing, very fluid situation andy that heard that pop. they seeing what are more suspected devices inside the building. originally, it was reported the suspected gunman, when he entered the building, had what appeared to be metallic canisters to the front and back. they heard a pop when he first came in and they entered

us live with the latest. >> reporter: well some people have already had their vacation plans interrupted early. from what we know this morning, we know that folks on the north carolina island of ocracoke have been evacuated as well as hatteras island is also being evacuated. now we've learned within the hour. and hurricane earl is now a category three. it has been downgraded but make no mistake about it here, it can still do a lot of damage with winds packing up to 125 miles per hour right now. maryland emergency officials are meeting today about the impact it's expected to have on ocean city. the mayor there said they have about 200,000 people there now leading up to this big labor day weekend. city officials are also warning swimmers about the dangerous riptides there in the water. now here in d.c. they don't expect much from hurricane earl. however, residents are being asked to prepare for power outages and flooding similar to what we have seen during the severe storms lately. virginia governor bob mcdonnell is expected to declare a statewide emergency today. that will giv

to get you started today at 6:00. we are glad you're with us early i'm gurvir dhindsa. >> i'm steve chenevey. thank you for being with us. let's talk about earl a little bit more now. evacuations are already under way in north carolina this morning as hurricane earl approaches the east coast. officials ordered all tourists to leave okracoke island starting at 5:00 a.m. this morning. the island's year-round residents are being asked to leave but they do not have to follow the evacuation order. >>> the scene was pretty peaceful along north carolina's outer banks yesterday but the storm is expected to range bring high winds and rains to the area by late thursday, early friday. all right, tuck. we are preparing for what is going on there. just hot for us here. >> mid-90s again in the forecast here. the big change from last night when most people went to bed, hurricane watch now issued for the virginia coastline in addition to most of the north carolina. got a map to show you. we'll take another quick look at earl. surf city, north carolina to paramour island, that is under a hurricane w
